Subject: 2m/11m crossband QSO: legal?
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
IMHO, I believe this would not be permissible. There are no provisions in
Part 97 for routine cross-band communications between the amateur service
and the citizens radio service. I am surprised the repeater owner condoned
this. He's probably not too concerned about your license (or his, for
that matter).

Last night the deferred elections for 1994-5 were held and the
retiring committee was re-elected unopposed. So, if you can't
remember who's who, here's a list:
President Col Davies VK2CTD
Vice President Jim Swan VK2BQS
Secretary Pat Leeper VK2JPA
Treasurer Alan Fall VK2DPM
Col has volunteered to be Newsletter Editor, and Pat is
again the Boadcast Officer.
Can you help us in any way -- with news items, or perhaps you
could volunteer to be a backup relay operator in time of
illness etc. If you can, let us know via the callbacks on the
different frequencies, or drop a packet message to VK2JPA at
VK2AAB (until VK2RWI comes back on air). Your assistance as
always will be greatly appreciated. Local news from your club
is always welcome -- any news in the digital field of amateur
radio.

Snippet from the contest replies
--------------------------------
No - nothing to do with the contest - but did you know that
the Maple Leaf Radio Society in Canada runs a Maple Leaf award
for contacting Canadian prefixes. What was surprising to us
was the number mentioned in the various awards, with the top
award going to those contacting 200 prefixes!
We had no idea Canada had so many prefixes -- these date from
after February 15 1965, the date when Canada received its
official flag. The club is located in Ontario at Listowel, and
if you are interested, we will include the full address from
the leaflet which arrived with a contest log from Canada.

Subject: Help! How to Improve my CW Speed?
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
Yuzu--just a tad more, if I may.
Using a tape, put the pencil down. Deliberately force
yourself to start to learn to copy in your head. It
is simply a new approach to an old, familiar theme.
You will start hearing words [or parts of words] and
not letters.
There are a variety of methods to copying CW. You've
learned one to about its end, i.e., letter-by-letter.
Try deliberately this new approach. You'll fall back
[speed-wise] but that will be only temporarily; you
will recover and pass your old maximum speed in time.
In-the-head copying will never be 100% "solid" at
first [perhaps later] but it will soon get you over
your plateau and you will start to feel much more
comfortable at 30+ wpm. Later, the "solid" copy will
be there at 30 wpm while the fractionated, in-the-head
copy is up at 35-40 wpm. You need to learn a new method
of copying in order to bring along your old letter-by-letter
method of 100% "solid" copying. 73,

I don't understand why someone would think your request was a joke. High
speed CW is a skill that not many hams have aquired. I am like you, I
copy by letter and can not copy behind. I am interested in any tips you
get on this subject.
I know a few CW DX'ers that can copy CW above 35 WPM. They all can
copy in their head. Hearing words and not letters is the only way you
can copy high speed CW. I don't know how they got this ability, but I know
most of them have had many years of practice.
Good luck.

Subject: Help! How to improve my CW speed?
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
This is a very good question. I have found that going 30-35+ wpm does require
some new techniques. Below is a list of things that have worked for me...
1. Practice on the air with stations that are sending at or slightly over
your ability to copy. This sets up a challenge.
2. Put your pencil down and try to recognize whole words as units, rather than
mechanically copying characters down on paper. Only use the pen to jot down
notes. You will naturally recognize commonly used words like QTH, the, is,
rig, name, etc immediately. You will be suprized at how may words you already
know. For all the other words that you don't know:
3. Form the word mentally in your mind, rather than using a pen.
Visualize the characters of the "current" word in your mind. Its almost like
drawing the word in your head and erasing it as the "next" word arrives.
It helps sometimes to close your eyes while doing this. (Rememeber your
mind can draw characters faster than your hands - so your not limited to
how fast you can write/type, which is usually what causes the platue to
begin with).
4. As the"current" word is completely formed, your mind will take some finite
time to recognize it. If you take too long, you may miss the next word...
My advise is to simply let the current word go and focus on bagging the next
one. This is the key. If you don't let it go, you will probably miss the
next word and the next, losing the whole context of the phrase. This is the
hardest part of copying in the head. Give up one, to get the rest...
5. As you get better at this, your mind will develop the ability to "copy behind".
That is, your mind has the ability to both work on recognizing the "last" word
and at the same time visualize the formation of the next word. This takes alot
of practice.
6. Relax. Don't get too nervous about missing a word. Always look ahead! The key
is too minimize the number of missed words, not bag every last word.
7. As you copy words, think about the context of the sentance or phase being sent.
Many times you can "anticapate" the next word(s). You probably already do this
when copying code on paper.
8. Enter into a real conversation, not just QTH is, RIG is, etc... but a conversation
that you may have in person.
9. Practice.
Copying in your head really allows you to use CW as a second language. It is not as
difficult as it sounds, but it does require some work. But once you learn how to do
it consistently, it is extremely enjoyable. And you will meet some very interesting
people young and old. Enjoy...

Tony,
I found a file in postscript format many months ago. I don't remember
where I got it. If I can find it I will e-mail it to you.

To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
The 147.21+ repeater that was mentioned earlier (where the "BOMB Squad"
resides-stands for something like "boys of Mt. Baldy") has a PL of either
151.4 or 156.7 (I forget which it was). They have a good net on Sundays
at 7pm with a "Elmers" Q&A after the net (around 8:20pm or so).
One not-so-wide-coverage repeater is W6GNS on 146.175+, located atop the
Whittier-Puente Hills, about 25 miles east of downtown L.A. Coverage
begins just south of the San Fernando Valley and it's nearly HT-doable
southwards to Irvine. Coverage to the east falls off northeast of the
Whittier hills towards Pomona and can get spotty if you're at the
southern base of the hills (like La Habra).

I suspect your friend may have other problems causing the X-10 to trigger,
like high RF levels do to antenna problems. I suspect he may also be
having RFI problems with other devices in his house.
I run up to a KW on 40 through 10 and have not had a problem with RF
triggering the X-10s. Touch lamps are another story. Those darn things
tolerate very little RF. I have had some success in keeping RF out of
the lamps by wrapping the power cord in a toroid core (Radio Shack #273-104).
